Nenes Handmade Tree Bark Basket - Mexico

$42.00

The Nenes Handmade Tree Bark Basket is a stunning, handcrafted piece that highlights culture and tradition. Nene means “baby” in Spanish, and the name speaks to the original use of the baskets. These rustic baskets have been used as baby carriers by indigenous communities in Central Mexico since pre-Hispanic times – a tradition that continues in present day. The top strap is worn across the forehead so that parents can carry their little ones on their backs while getting their chores done. As an interior décor item, the Nenes Basket hangs beautifully as wall art or could be used to hold a variety of small items, such as dried flowers or even lightweight personal accessories.

The mini size Nenes Basket is traditionally made and used to carry the family Niño Dios (baby Jesus statue) to and from church for blessings, particularly around Christmas and in February for Día de la Candelaria.

Care: Wipe with a damp cloth, warm water and mild soap to clean. While a little water won’t hurt this piece, it should not be left damp for long periods, or a musty scent may occur. If this does occur, set the piece in a warm, dry local and reshape if necessary.
