SPRING

When we think about spring, one of the first things that comes to mind is rebirth. The sun is shining brighter, the days are longer, and nature is beginning its awakening. We finally see the hints of new color we have been waiting months for. But one of the things that stands out the most to us about this season is the slow progression and change that occurs. New beginnings take time. And this season offers us all the inspiration in the world, while allowing the time for it to unfold. This is a great time to take the inspiration from nature and let it lead us to our own new beginnings.

In winter, we work to add warmth to our homes, and now in spring, we can begin peeling back the layers, allowing ourselves and our spaces to be vulnerable again. Our reflections of the season past can now turn into action. For some, this is the time for spring cleaning, an occasion to reassess belongings, organize, and deep clean. But rebirth means something different to each of us, and thus it will mean something different to our homes. We can think about what we need for well-being and let this intention drive the design of our spaces.

We can simply begin by focusing on one area and working our personal goals into that space. Maybe the winter dragged on a bit too long this year, and you are in need of a boost. Use this as inspiration for your space. Try swapping out some heavy features for some light ones. New, lighter weight sheets and pillows can give an airy feeling to your bedroom after a long winter. Bed linens and other everyday textiles are also a great place to add a bit of life with color. Spring is a season full of possibility and so many beautiful shades of color. Take some inspiration from your favorite things outside, whether they be the unfurling leaves, the blooming cherry blossoms, or even the glow of a later sunset. If you are in need of a calming rebirth after a rough winter, perhaps work some neutrals and pale tones into your space. Or if you desire energy in this new season, take a leap and go for some bright, vibrant colors.

Spring: a lovely reminder of how beautiful change can truly be.

Another easy and inexpensive way to freshen up your space in spring is with scent. The season is filled with enticing fragrances, and adding hints of these indoors can really enliven our mood. Whether you prefer candles, diffusers, room sprays, or even fresh flowers, these scents remind us of the blooming and rebirth that is taking place outside and can, in turn, motivate our own desire for change or revitalization. For a sense of calm and relaxation this spring, try making some lavender sachets to put in your drawers to add an air to your belongings.

And if spring cleaning is your style, you can even enliven the means and method. Cleaning can be more enjoyable when you have well designed, thoughtful tools. A good pan brush or broom that is made from natural materials can offer its own inspiration and make the work feel less of a chore. Or you can pick up some new containers for reorganizing your kitchen and bath. Try some simple glass containers that showcase the natural beauty of all your little things, from grains and spices to bath salts and soap bars. Sometimes it’s tough to realize the beauty we already have in our homes, so putting our everyday commodities on display not only adds color and texture but allows us (and others) to appreciate the items we value. We can let the spring season be our opportunity to put ourselves out there and let this confidence be part of our own reawakening.
