A STYLE ‘JUST RIGHT’
Just because it is Scandinavian doesn’t mean it needs to be minimalist. The design aesthetic of the region focuses on simplicity and clean lines, but it does so more to put function, practicality, and a relaxing way of home-keeping at the forefront. The Swedes have this simple mindset for balanced living called lagom (pronounced “lar-gohm”), which means ‘not too much, not too little - just right.’ The philosophy is about finding the right balance for you and appreciating everything in moderation.
The philosophy is carried through all aspects of life, from work to entertainment and free time as well as elements of the home. Your space should feel ‘right,’ not the way someone tells you it should but because it is a reflection of you. The concern is not removing everything that isn’t essential. Instead it is about keeping what you love, even adding things but doing so in a balanced way, not going overboard. It’s also about working with what you have to achieve harmony. Perhaps you are an avid reader and your book collection reflects that. Rather than keeping all your books on display at once, try showcasing a portion of them at a time and mixing in other accents then rotating them, swapping out a few and exchanging them for others. This will not only keep your space fresh and alive but offer you some balance with your most loved possessions.
Lagom is also a great philosophy to implement when you have a small space. Look to find solutions where needed so your space is not overwhelmed. A big part of lagom is about staying organized. Things don’t need to all be cleared but rather displayed in a thoughtful and organized manner. The Scandinavian style is so clean and modern because the ordinary, everyday objects are well-designed and beautifully crafted; not much more needs to be added to the space other than the basics. This makes it easy to implement the philosophy in a small space. But even in a larger space, keeping it simple allows for more openness, more light, more room to function, and more peace and well-being. Regardless of the size of your home, balance and moderation are the Swedish cornerstones.
The well-honed philosophy favors lots of neutrals but also can make good use of color if it is balanced throughout a space. As you’ll notice in Scandinavian design, patterns and bright colors are frequently used but in moderation and often as accents. Rather than drawing interest through paint, try keeping walls a simple shade of white and incorporating accent colors through the likes of throw pillows, artwork, and natural elements, such as plants. Mid-century or not, lagom can help us craft spaces that exhibit all the elements of design in a balanced and intentional way that is ‘just right’ for each of us.
